What to check when an overlay stops updating in OBS

Reloading everything at random hides the cause and turns a brief fault into a recurring one. This sequence begins with cheap checks and separates the browser, OBS and run state.

General stream-layout configuration view
URL, layout and saved state should be tested separately.
Step 1

Confirm the change was saved

Check species, variant, nickname and position in administration before blaming OBS. If the other-tab warning appears, select Carry on here in the tab you want to use and make the change there. Stop using the disconnected tab for editing.

Confirm the change was saved and distinguish team order from the order of name, types and sprite. Changing the panel arrangement does not change the layout of a pinned URL: that behavior is intentional.

Step 2

Open the exact viewing URL in a private browser

Copy the URL used by OBS and open that exact address privately. Do not generate a new URL during the test. If the private browser updates while OBS does not, the run and service work and the problem is limited to source or scene.

Do not test with administration

The correct address only displays the team. Editing controls mean it is not the URL that belongs in OBS.

Step 3

Isolate the source in an empty scene

Create a temporary scene with one browser source using the same URL and dimensions. If it works, inspect filters, crops, visibility, nested scenes and duplicates in the original composition. If it also fails, reload once and measure reconstruction time.

Step 4

Separate delay, disconnect and cache

The overlay receives saved changes through an event connection that attempts to recover after an interruption. A delay eventually catches up; a disconnect stops receiving changes. Record the time of a single operation and check sleep, network changes, VPN and firewall before repeating it.

CSS/JavaScript and images have separate versions. The overlay can detect a new version and reload when it receives the next real game change. Do not expect deployment to cause an immediate reload or assume reconnecting alone will trigger one.

If the URL works in a private browser while OBS still shows old resources, refresh the source cache once and repeat a test change. Do not create another game or replace links to diagnose stale cache.

Prepare a report that can be reproduced

  • Operating system and OBS version.
  • Source resolution and FPS.
  • The exact operation that did not arrive.
  • The result in a private browser.
  • Approximate time and a screenshot without the private URL.

This comparison quickly separates data, connection and rendering. Never send the full administration access unless essential and reviewed.
