OBS browser sources: stability and performance without losing quality

A browser source is a web page running inside OBS. Its stability depends on the overlay, resolution, frame rate, graphics acceleration and what happens when scenes change.

NuzPoke browser-source configuration in OBS
OBS receives the viewing URL. The administration URL must never be used as a source.
Foundation

Understand the work OBS actually performs

OBS loads HTML, CSS, JavaScript and images, then keeps an event connection open to receive saved changes. NuzPoke sends team and layout updates live, so you do not need to reload the source after each edit.

Resolution alone does not determine resource use. Animated sprites, patterns and multiple active instances add work. Try static HOME or Smogon Sprite Project for a composition without sprite animation. Still search thumbnails do not reflect the cost of the animated team in OBS.

Reuse one source per team when the design allows it. For several scenes, add the existing source and check resource use with the game and alerts running.

Setup

Choose resolution and FPS for the visual need

For a mostly static overlay with occasional transitions, 30 FPS is a sensible starting point. Move to 60 FPS only when continuous motion benefits from it and the stream also runs at that rate. Full-canvas dimensions make in-overlay alignment flexible; a cropped source saves surface area but must be positioned in OBS.

1920×1080Flexible for Full HD scenes and overlay-side alignment.
1280×720Suitable for 720p output and systems with less GPU headroom.
Cropped areaUseful when the team position never changes and its bounds are known.
Stability

Decide when the source should shut down

Closing the source when it is not visible saves resources but rebuilds the page when the scene returns. That can create a blank moment or restart animation. Keeping it active improves continuity at a memory cost. Test ten scene changes, make an update while hidden and check whether the complete team returns on time.

Diagnosis

Isolate the bottleneck before reducing quality

  1. Open the URL in a normal browser.
  2. Test an empty scene with one browser source.
  3. Temporarily disable backgrounds and continuous motion.
  4. Reduce to 30 FPS before reducing resolution.
  5. Check rendering and encoding statistics separately.

If a normal browser also fails, investigate the network, URL or service. If only a complex OBS scene fails, composition load is the likely boundary.

Method

Run a fifteen-minute rehearsal with real changes

Over fifteen minutes, add a member, drag two Pokémon, edit a long nickname, try an available evolution and remove a member. Switch scenes between operations and watch update timing, source reconstruction and dropped frames.

Also test the Order arrows and enable Outline with a color that contrasts with the text. These settings should reach the source without copying another URL. A pinned URL keeps its chosen arrangement while still receiving the team and other saved options.

After a NuzPoke update, the overlay may reload automatically when the next real game change delivers a new resource version. Deployment alone does not force an immediate reload. Record the settings that work before going live.
